draculahead

I don't think I posted this here before, but this is a video I made last summer to Metric's 'Rock Me Now' after watching several films directed by Grant Gee and David Lynch and music videos inspired by the latter. I considered going into something cinematography related but ended up going to school for general fine arts instead. Films are one of my passions though - I'm currently trying to watch every movie on the Criterion Collection list. The last one I saw was Peeping Tom. Probably the most eccentric film I've ever seen. Eccentric is putting it nicely. It's like calling Anna Piaggi completely normal. You think that shit's going to make sense? Nuh uh.

Speaking of weird films, I saw flyers for this all around Toronto and I am so there it's not even funny. 7pm Monday bitches. But honestly how amazing is this combination? The first time I saw it on a street pole punctured by staples I almost wept. I literally took the flyer for it down and hung it up in my room. Currently staring at it as I type. (/fan girl rant) Oh and I'll add in a clip of the film to the song 'Idioteque' too. Makes zee heart swell, no? (channelling my inner french woman). Oh god speaking of, I successfully convinced many, many people I was an exchange student from England last night after speaking in a british accent for no less than twenty five minutes. Apparently intoxication will do that to you. BUT THAT'S BESIDE THE POINT, back to stereo face (radio head, eh eh?)

I bought Kid A on vinyl yesterday too. Best 31.95 I've ever spent. (fan girl rant ends now i swurr) Also staring at that as I type. But it's currently nestled on my pillow so I can fall asleep cradling it in my arms like a child does to a stuffed animal.

Too much?

My eyelashes catch my sweat

Seeing as I was too lazy to take photos of my outfits this weekend and I'm inspired by mainly morbid and idiosyncratic and depressing things at the moment (Otto Dix, David Lynch, that picture by Kevin Carter...) I thought I would show you my AWESHUM SUNGLASSES COLLECTION (or lack thereof)...

My favourite... cat-eye Vuarnets. Proves thrift stores are your friend, all odd smells and random ridiculous outfits aside.
Hippie wannabe? I look like I want to rape children in these glasses. Kind of explains why this is the first time I've put them on since two summers ago.
Ah, you can't really tell, but these are cat eye-ish, also from a thrift store, though I have no idea who or when they were made. They're cute though, kind of my Vuarnets replacement though.
These also never get sufficient wear time. I bought them when I had a fetish for huge, bug-eyed glasses a la Nicole Richie. They were from H&M though, so they win a few points for that, but if you could see the print on them, you'd be a little put off too.
If you want to gain points with library nerds, buy grandfather glasses, take out the lens and ta-da! If you want to lose points with all of society, however, you take pictures like these. Take pointers, kidz. (By the way, that's actually what I look like when I'm interested in a book. I'm going to pull out the peer pressure card and tell you to go buy The Reader immediately. Or a rapist will climb up your window and murder you and your family in the middle of the night. Chain letter style.)
Tsk tsk tsk, what do we have here? Kanye West shutter shades, you ask? You are incorrect, children. They are merely glasses that have infectiously entered the world we now refer to as mainstream and teenagers took to wearing them humming "Stronger" down the street, but really the creators of said glasses simply asked themselves, "What can we create to make sane people want to drop-kick people wearing the thing we make?" "OMG SHUTTER SHADES" "Who can we get to promote them who people want to drop-kick the most?" "OMG ONLY LYK, THE RAPPER OF THE CENTURY" and there you have it, children. Now, you might say, "Rose, arentcha a bit hypocritical?" and I would say "I bought them in a drunken stint at a Kanye West concert!" and then drop-kick you. No, but seriously, don't ever buy these. They remain here as a reminder of the most narcissistic concert I ever attended. ALRIGHT KANYE YOU MAKE GOOD MUSIC YOU CAN STOP CALLING YOURSELF THE LOUIS VUITTON DON NOW. thx
Finally! My most recent purchase, a set of John Lennon/Harry Potter glasses I got from H&M in Montreal, I bought in a fit of H&M two-floor shopping high. You have no idea how much I had to restrain myself from buying $300 worth of clothes. I only had $300 for the week. It was hard. :( Point is, I have yet to bring these buggers out of hiding, and I will soon in an outfit I shall post soon, I hope!

By the way, I will have some pictures from Montreal up soon, I hope. My friend just has my camera right now and I have yet to retrieve it.

This concludes our borderline insane broadcast for this evening.

For your entertainment, here is one of my favourite Dwight scenes from The Office...

Wes Anderson films are my favourite. Speedo-clad Bill Murray gun-fighting while The Stooges plays on is film perfection at it's finest. That first picture is a bathroom wall in a Dominican Republic airport, but it reminds me of the Fleet Foxes' album cover for Ragged Wood.

We're gonna Paint the town, and All that Jazz

I don't know if I've mentioned it or not, but I have been feeling very 1920s-esque recently, probably because I just watched Chicago a couple of weeks ago. Every woman looks absolutely amazing in that movie, and that especially goes for the obvious leads Renee Zellwegger and Catherine Zeta Jones. I could never really pick which one was more inspiring in the film because both did such a phenomenal job I was completely blown away by their performances. What blew me away more though was their outfits. It's not a surprise that Colleen Atwood, the costume designer for Chicago, won an Oscar for her work. Her resume is unbelievable, with movies like Memoirs of a Geisha, Little Women, Sweeny Todd, etc. I remember watching all of the movies she designed for and thinking about how wonderful the costumes were. I mean, she's been nominated for an Oscar seven freaking times. My point is that she is someone to look out for. Seriously, I could watch her movies on mute and just look at the outfits and I'd be satisfied. She is that good.

Back to Chicago (apologies for the rambling, I really should stop doing that...), this is the movie that really got my 1920's mood going. All I could think about after watching it were beads and feathers and red lipstick and cloches and bob haircuts- practically anything that had to do with the flapper look. Personally it was Renee Zellweger's outfits that got me addicted to the era. The silver dress from the number "Roxie" and the black dress from the solo of "Nowadays" are both so so so beautiful. I've been looking for a picture of the black dress forever, but all I could find was a clip of it on youtube. A video gives a better visual any way.

Obviously inspired by the 1920's, I created this somewhat tamer outfit than the original era. I would kill to have every piece in my closet. This ensemble seems like a suitable thing to wear in the 21st century as well- it's not too drastic or anything. I mean, how cute is that cloche? I think that is the most desperate thing I want right now, a hat like that. I haven't seen any authentic cloches when I've been shopping. They have usually been altered to be more adaptable to the fashion era we have today. Basically it's because no one really wears cloches anymore. At least I haven't seen anyone. I guess I am going to have to pop my eBay cherry and look for one, I literally can not find them anywhere. I guess that's my new objective as of today, find a pretty little cloche on eBay. To be continued...

Norma Jean Baker

Almost a year ago, I had this obsessive stage with Marilyn Monroe. Her style, essence, charm, everything was just so perfect. At that point I had never seen any movies she acted in, only biography stories and clips of things here and there. But a couple of nights ago I watched "Some Like It Hot" and I immediately fell back in love with her. Every scene she was in she exuded this delightful ambiance, she was just so lovely. So this post is rightfully dedicated to Marilyn Monroe and her stunning fashion sense above all.
